Extraction is sometimes viewed as the end of treatment, but in many cases it is actually the first step in restoring long-term oral health. Once healing has occurred, the missing tooth may be replaced with a dental implant, bridge, or removable prosthesis depending on the patient's individual needs. Replacement can help restore chewing function, maintain alignment, and improve the appearance of the smile. There are also situations where replacement is unnecessary, such as certain wisdom tooth extractions. The appropriate plan depends on which tooth was removed, the patient's bite, overall oral health, available bone, and personal treatment goals. Coordination between the oral surgeon, general dentist, and restorative dental team helps ensure that extraction is performed with the final outcome in mind rather than treating the procedure as an isolated event.

Having a tooth removed is rarely something a patient looks forward to, but surgical extraction can be an important step toward eliminating infection, relieving discomfort, and protecting the rest of the mouth when a tooth can no longer be predictably restored.
